Thanks. I should probably leave well enough alone but I'm gonna open up the fluid adjustment a little more next time and see what happens. I'm also borrowing a SATAjet RP 2 from my cousin. I'm gonna try it on the decklid and see how I like it.

Please give a report on the SATA RP as I have been considering one for a clear gun.

Absolutely. I've let a few good deals pass on ebay because I wasn't sure if I would like them or not.

Few more pics. I'm opening the fluid adjustment more each time I spray the clear and I seem to be laying it down better. The fender's were sprayed with the fluid opened five turns.

What gun are you using now?

An Iwata LPH400. It's funny because I know that a lot of people seem to use between 2 - 3 1/2 turns out, but I've never had real good luck with that. But I've also switched to high-flow fittings as well, so hard to know what's really helping. When I get some spare time, I'm gonna do some serious testing on an old beater I have. I'm tire of doing my testing on the fly.

I am at 3.5 turns with mine and 22-24 psi. Maybe I should try another turn out.
This is ********** MS clear (the first time I used this clear) 3 coats: It flashed extremely fast even with the 885 slow reducer. 1968 Coronet R/T

I don't know what pressure I'm at. My regulator is junk. It kept changing air pressure so I tossed it. I now just use the adjustment on the gun. I figure it's on there for a reason. I set my air pressure using my test pattern. I raise the pressure until it starts splitting the pattern, then back off slightly until I have a solid cigar shape.

That goes along with the advice I received from another LPH400 user. He said throw the regulator out and turn the air up until you blow the fan out and then back off until you get a good pattern.
This puts the gun way over the "recommend" pressures listed but does make it spray out nice. I think I was somewhere around 26 psi when I shot the Hot Rod Flatz SS paint on the interior of the Buick. There is a certain "sound" the gun develops when the air pressure is just right. That is what I believe the pros tune to as well as the pattern. 1968 Coronet R/T

Very true. I guess it's something you get used to after using a specific gun after a while. I'm still planning on trying the SATA RP this week on the decklid, but I'm really liking how the Iwata is getting more dialed in now. I can only imagine the cloud dust of overspray from the SATA. If it's just horrible, I won't get one no matter how nice it sprays. Still excited to try it out though. |
