Hello all,

I have gone through every part, replaced every seal and bearing, rebuilt every assembly and or replaced it with new.

I Have sealed every part with PM industries Silver, which is a urethane sealer, and top coated all interior areas with their AG 111 two part urethane top coat.

I am now trying to figure out how to paint. More importantly, how to prep for paint.

I have read all the stickies and have gained a wealth of information.

Progress has slowed to almost a standstill, while learning blocking techniques, and spray techniques.

I am spraying with a Graco HVLP stand alone system with a 9.5 turbine. Using Finish one 2K high build primer, and Martin Senior single stage urethane top coat in AMC Navy Blue.

What I started with:

Where I am at with the finishing:

Everything else I have done in between the photos is shown in the link in my signature.

All comments will be appreciated!

Looks like a nice project - keep those pictures coming ;-)

Your prep work looks good from the couple of parts you have there -- are you hung up on a particular problem? If so, post up a question in the "body & paint" forum you will get more traffic there...keep the "member project" thread here as more of a project journal.

Thanks Chris,

If you could take a minute or two and run through the pictures in my link, and see how I cleaned and sealed the body panels, I would appreciate it. As I see now, I did these steps much differently than a normal prep.

I used a urethane sealer that I put on with a foam roller, two coats, that originally was designed for bridge work.

My problems, or concerns? LOL, I am trying to restore a 1980 Jeep J10 Honcho. I want to make it as original as possible. I have finally understood with this site, that there are two different theories to auto body finishing here.

The professional, that turns out factory or better quality finish, as quickly as possible, and the restorer that turns out the quote, ultimate finish. I am having trouble finding where I fit in. I am a perfectionist by nature, I research, plan, and apply. I am a Construction Manager by trade, and have taken pride in the details which make my jobs stand out.

Auto body is very similar is some respects to my trade, but much different in others. I have carved gun stocks that have a finish you can see the the individual whiskers on your face in the reflection, but have never used a "block" while finishing.

The Jeep was originally painted, with spot welds and seams and even a run or two. I bet they did not know what blocking was on the paint line at AMC in 1980.

I am just overwhelmed as to what I need to do/ what I want to do...

I can wet sand a gun stock with 400 with my hand, and have a true finish with no low spots, but with the hand on metal, it looks like crap.

I have more luck dry sanding than wet sanding on the Auto body, I can see more of the imperfections. I probably sand too much, the edges get cut down to the core in places. Then prime again and repeat... Chasing my tail.

I think I am doing too much, but feel I am not doing enough... I am getting tired after 20 months of labor, and now not feeling that I am accomplishing anything.

Sorry for venting.

Thanks again for commenting.

That red stuff isn't the 'red oxide' lacquer primer they sell at farm supply places is it?

Tough for me to tell what you did or didn't do from the pictures. Assuming for a minute that you are at the point where you have a suitable base that will take a high-build primer -- that's where I would head next.

Get yourself a good set of automotive sanding blocks -- DuraBlock for example. Shoot high-build and use a guide coat to get your panels flat.

Jim did a phenomenal job of laying this out at this thread, which I just turned into a sticky:

Bare metal was coated with two coats of Master Series Silver Sealer. (PM industries) It is a urethane sealer. The inside of all panels and frame were top coated with AG 111, their two part urethane top coat.

The red primer is DuraCoat high build primer in a spray can. PM industries said to spray some primer over the Master Coat Silver Sealer before it dried, so that it would chemically bond to the sealer and leave a good bonding surface for the primer.

I know next to nothing about DuraCoat - but it doesn't look to be an automotive refinishing product and the fact that it's in a spray can means it's likely an enamel or a lacquer paint.

Is the DuraCoat the last stuff you sprayed, or is that grey paint a primer?

If the grey is also a primer, exactly what product is it?

The grey is "Finish 1" made by Acme, It is a 2K high build primer.

The red is almost totally being removed, before spraying the high build grey.

This is what I was told to use by the paint specialist at NAPA.

Nice Job. I checked out the photos. Nice yard and such. Where abouts do you live? My wife wants to move from Arizona to somewhere "green".. haha

Hello Quad,

Green, well, I live in the bluegrass state! Had a friend from New York that when he found out that I moved to Kentucky, he wanted to visit to see the blue grass...

I am in the Capitol, Frankfort, middle of the state. We all want to move to Arizona so our allergies will clear up!

The grass is always greener...

Thanks!
