Hi guys, been lurking and reading on here for a few days. Im in the process of repainting a 1984 Mercedes 500 SEC. The original paint is actually in great shape (OEM Glasurit) , just a little bit of rust spots and corrosion on the aluminum hood and decklid. I havent decided on a color yet and have just now finished stripping everything of the exterior of the car, and removing both doors. More to follow soon.

After I clean the car, what grit should I sand the original paint down with, I'm not going Down to bare metal, but I want to apply primer over the original paint

So im a little confused. Is there a difference between primer and sealer? The car Im painting has good paint for the most part. It has a aluminum hood and decklid, and on the decklid, the paint has flaked off and the aluminum is corroding. I dont know what to spray over the original paint, primer or sealer? Or what grit i should sand the factory paint down to.

I have an epoxy (direct to metal) primer here in my garage. It says on the label that it can be reduced and used as a sealer so I guess a sealer is thinned down primer that is capable of sealing the old paint from the new paint.

I just had to do the same thing on my 560SEC, the paint was peeling on the trunk lid and hood but otherwise OK. I sanded it down with 80 grit paper then filled in any bare metal areas, then sanded down to get a smooth finish before applying the epoxy / 2k hybrid primer then base and clear.

It could use a little wet sanding and buffing but all in all, i'm happy with the result.

Lovely cars these, especially that velour interior. I had a Korean spec signal red 500SEC with velour but the car was trashed inside and out so I ended up parting it.

If it looks that good,,,just sand it with 320, seal it, then paint it............

Yes it is! Not a rear bumper I hope, because I have one cluttering my work shop amongst several other parts from two SEC's that I dismantled about a year ago. I'm glad you're making progress.

Ok Im at the stage where I want to shoot a primer or sealer. But Im not sure which way to go. Got good existing paint, with some filler on little dents here and there, nothing major (door dings). Entire car has been sanded down with 400 grit. Few spots are bare metal, but most of it is the existing paint, which again was in great shape. I really want to use a epoxy primer because of the corrosion resistance. Will it stick to the existing paint? Or should I just shoot a sealer on there? Does the basecoat have to be applied shortly after the sealer, or can it sit for a few days then be shot? What route do you think I should go. Thanks again for everything. I plan on using Sherwin Willaims products throughout the project if that helps

Spot prime with epoxy the bare metal and the filler and let flash good per tech sheet. Then go over the epoxy with urethane primer 2-3 coats. Let cure. Wet sand with 400 again its ready to paint without sealer if you have no breaks in the primer.

If you didn't have the cut thrus and filler showing I would say seal if you like and paint. If you spray epoxy mixed as a sealer and paint bare metal spot repairs or bare filler you risk lifting edges and/or seeing halos in the finished job. If you are final sanding with 400 I hope the top coat has no metallics.
