As if I don't have enough to do I decided to paint my bike.
I had it apart to install gear driven camshafts and bearings. My fuel tank has a dent in it from the original owner but he had a brand new tank, still in the bubble plastic, for a price I couldn't refuse.
Here's my bike in the condition I bought it:
The DENT
Damage on bat wing fairing and saddlebags:
Just the latch hinge cover is $65 in good used condition:
Lots of dirt:
After a good cleaning:
I decided to paint it solid black and get rid of the pin stripes.
That meant sanding the brand new gas tank and repainting it.
This is ********** Black base coat and their Euro Clear as sprayed:
Wet sanded with 2000, buffed with Megs 105 & 205:
Comparison of H.D. vivid black (old tank) and ********** black:
When I do the side covers I will show another comparison of the blacks.

Got the lower fairings and side covers painted.
Had a terrible time trying to buff the side covers because I had to hold them with one hand and the tremendously heavy buffer in the other. Some of you guys that paint these things all the time must build jigs or something to hold them? Here's the right side cover installed: Here's the lower fairings as sprayed: I will have to remove and spray the front fender and upper fairings before I install the lowers so they will sit on the shelf for now. 1968 Coronet R/T

I use a mini buffer for all my bike work. HD black is commonly known not to be a deep black. I also use PPG DC 3000 clear on bikes because it dries so fast and produces and excellent, durable finish.

Scott,
What brand mini-buffer do you have? Are you happy with it? 1968 Coronet R/T

Chicago Pneumatic 7201P. Been using it for 5 years and it's fine. Not as pleasing as the Snap-On gear driven, barrel shaft my friend has. That one is more than twice as much but I'll get one anyway. |
Thanks, I should invest in one before I wear my arm out or break something trying to buff these motorcycle parts.

The hardest part so far has been getting the parts off the bike to paint them.
Just pulled the front fender which meant removing the windshield, upper fairing, brake calipers, front axle and wheel. I want to change out the dented fork slider covers too and that means pulling the radio, front light assembly and forks. One thing for sure is I will know how to take this baby apart and put it back together before I'm done painting it. 1968 Coronet R/T

After much work I was able to get the front fender and outer fairing removed.
Here's a couple of pictures showing the wire routing for the light on the front fender: Notice that it goes in the hole then under the bracket then back out through a hole and is hidden inside the chrome trim: The outer fairing was damaged from the previous owner dropping the bike: After some cleaning, sanding and filler work the outer fairing and front fender were prepped and primed. This is Tamco DTM primer: As sprayed with ********** Black Base and Euro Clear: Cut and buffed the front fender: I will finish up the fairing tomorrow and post some pictures of it and the front fender assembled and ready to be installed on the bike. Ordered and installed new front shock covers and I am waiting on some seals for the air suspension system. Also some new speakers for the front to match the new ones I put in the back a couple of months ago. I will be starting on the saddle bags next but it may be a while before I can get to it. 1968 Coronet R/T
