Thanks. It was a really neat car, one of 300 or so GTO hardtops in 1970 with the Ram Air IV and 4 speed. It was optioned to race -- manual drums, manual steering, M21 close ratio 4 speed, steel wheels, and a 4.33 rear.

I originally wanted to build a Pure Stock Drags car with it, and had the engine built to the limit of the rules, but it ended up being too nice (and valuable) to beat on, so I sold it.

Thanks,

Scott

GTX was owned by a guy who passed away in the 1970's. His buddy ended up with the car. I bought it from the buddy in 2005 in Northern VA. Sweet car and very complete and original except for the engine, which was from a later model C body if I recall correctly.

I sold it to a Mopar guy in 2010 or 2011. He made some progress on the restoration, then sold it to another guy, who had it painted, I think. Then he sold it to a friend who hasn't done anything to it. I'd like to be in a position to buy it back, but it's not in the cards anytime soon.

Progress continues, but not at breakneck speed. Grille is out. Getting ready to yank the engine, but my cherry picker is 5,000 miles away. Ordered a chain hoist/chain fall and will see if I can fab up an A-frame to hang it from.

Crazy busy here. Example -- 2 weeks ago, I got back from Bosnia (Sarajevo) on Wednesday, only to find out that I had to leave for Ethiopia on Thursday. However, after my flight from Naples to Frankfurt, I was called back to the mother ship; trip canceled. Painful trying to get back to Naples – I flew from Frankfurt to Munich to catch a connecting flight to Naples, but the flight to Naples was canceled. So I spent the night in Munich. Next day, I flew back to Frankfurt and caught a flight to Naples.

So instead of a weekend spent in Ethiopia, I was home and able to get a bit of work done. Can’t really tell by looking at the car, but I was fairly productive –

-Got the brake booster/master cylinder out, along with the clutch master cylinder.

-Got the brake and clutch pedals out, and made up a few new curse words in the process.

-Front wiring harness is almost out.

-Intake manifold off.

Image

-Exhaust manifold/exhaust off. I loves me some Kroil – this stuff is great for loosening up stuck/rusted bolts.

Image

-Water pump off.

Image

-Shifter out.

-One crossmember out – this one appears to be mainly for the driveshaft. Still have to get the transmission crossmember off.

-Front bumper off.
Image

-Inner fender covers out – had to drill out about 5 rivets on each side. Was quite pleased to see how nice the sheetmetal looked behind the covers. The actual covers are in good shape, too.

Spent this past weekend in Berlin for some R&R with wife and daughter. Should be able to spend some time on the car this weekend and next. Plan is still to have disassembly complete by 1 January, but I don't think I'll make it.

Next step will be to pull the engine and trans. Had planned to drop the bellhousing and trans out the bottom, but that’s before I decided to fab up a wooden gantry to hang a chain hoist from. Now I may pull them as a unit.

Fellas -

Soon enough, it will be time to strip off the old paint. Here's what I'm thinking -- I have an 80 gallon compressor, a DA sander, and a fair bit of sandpaper for it -- this is what I plan to use for the larger areas - hood, fenders, doors, roof, decklid, etc. I'm assuming you use something like 36 grit. I think I have some that coarse, but much of it will be finer (60 grit, I think).

As for the harder to reach areas, I have a small angle grinder that I can use coarse paper on. For areas that are not accessible for the small angle grinder, I thought I would use a sandblaster (for areas with thicker metal that won't warp) or hand sanding (areas that may warp).

I live in Italy; do not have access to a soda blast facility (at least not one that I'm aware of), and not sure where to buy good chemical paint stripper.

Thanks,

Scott

Here I buy Aircraft Paint Stripper: http://www.autozone.com/paint-and-body/ ... 60023_0_0/

This stuff will take it off but it is nasty so don't get it in your eyes or inhale the fumes unnecessarily.

From the ad, "This item cannot be shipped to any US State, US Territory or US Military address." My address is US Military.

It may be available locally. Autozone, Home Depot and Walmart carry it here but I would imagine you have similar outlets over there?
