I've not abandoned this project. We went from Africa heat to tropical monsoons. I put some additional sound deadener in the back of the car. I'm also doing a little sanding and have started masking off the body to sand it and shoot the first round of build primer.

Very detailed video. Not something I'm going to do but I'm glad they took the time to put that out there for those who might.

Nope I didn't die and will this project to some unsuspecting soul. I've been busy. Our car club had our annual show yesterday and that tends to eat up a lot of my free time. The other problem has been the weather. We've had high heat and humidity well in to September and those are less than ideal conditions for shooting primers and paints. So I've been coasting a bit hoping for a break. There's still no relief in sight. Here are a few pictures to show where things stand right now.
First, here's what a guy in a 2 car garage has to do on a project like this. That's the rear bumper and the hood in final sealer taking up the wife's side of the garage. And here's the new wheels and tires working as a storage stand for the front bumper, valance and header panel. Here's the body, mostly masked, patiently waiting for autumn to arrive. |

It's been a busy day and a half.
The first project Friday evening was to get my "portable wall" put together. The stands are light stands left over from when I ran my photo studio. I made a top rail out of .5 inch PVC pipe, drilled holes in the pipe to fit the studs on the stands and then Gorilla taped the plastic sheet to the PVC. Here are a couple of panoramic shots from the outside and inside once the wall was raised. Once I had my plastic wall in place to contain the overspray I set about all the prep for Saturday's primer session. You can go through a bunch of paper towels and pre-clean trying to get one wiped down properly. I was out of bed early today to try and get the primer down before it really heated up. You'd think fall would be here but it isn't Temperatures should be in the mid-90's today and the humidity crept back in overnight. I mixed the TAMCO 5310 build primer 4:1 with a splash of medium reducer. This was all sprayed with my Eastwood Concours gun and a 1.8 tip. The little Kobalt 60 gallon compressor did a fair enough job keeping up. Remember that seam where I sectioned in the aftermarket quarter panel back here at the trunk? Invisible. I'm kind of proud of that. Overall it went very well. I had 2 fans running inside the home made booth, venting to the back yard. The HVLP keep the overspray to a minimum and the smell was not bad at all after I finished spraying. I'm sure I'll be smelling it some as the primer cures over the next 24 hours. And guess what? Tomorrow I get to start sanding again! Woohoo! |
