If the scratches are deep enough to feel with finger nail. Should I hit the whole plastic evenly with a rotary & wool w/compound? Or just sand the whole thing with something like 240 until the scratches are out? Then buff & polish.
Right now one hit with a wool pad doesn't do too much at all I think hand sanding is better due to less friction compared to rotary buffer.
thanks

Hi, not sure. Just clear headlight, feels thick, flexible & tuff, maybe acrylic? As for its hardness, one hit with rotary buff & wool pad with compound didn't get them out. |
very hard to say without seeing it or being able to feel the scratch.

Most of the headlights that aren't real bad will buff out with a
coarse compound to start with, but scratches that you feel have to be leveled with sandpaper first. I've had some that took 600 grit initially, then 1000, 1500,2000 and even sometimes 3000 for a final sanding, but once done sanding, buffing was easy and made it clear again. JC.

So how is this done professionally? How are headlights and tail lights repaired and the UV coating replaced?
I re-did a tail light for the Victory where the UV coating was peeling off. Sanded with 600, 1000, then painted with Rustoleum lens tint. Basically did a cut and buff after that and it looks great. Is there a clear you can use for this kind of thing? |
If you do a Goggle search for... Uv clear coats for headlight repair.... you should come up with at least a half dozen "new" products with various claims. I have seen SEM, Duplicolor, and few others lately. There are even a few cream polish polymers that are said to restore "some" of characteristics of the original UV coating. Most of this stuff is so new there really isn't a lot of long term results/reviews on it. I have used SEM products in the past for various things and they usually do what they say they will do.....
Metal, wood, fiberglass, we work it all... www.furniturephysicians.com We can restore the irreplaceable!

Sand them with 600 grit, then spray a adhesion promoter like "Bulldog"
and you can use any urethane clear you want. It's easy, fast and durable. JC.
