Hey guys,

Would anyone know why compressors seem to be so much more expensive here in Australia? 3HP 100L air compressors range from $700 to $1000 whereas in the US it seems to be a LOT cheaper to buy ie the big 60 gallon standing compressors which people are saying costs no more than $400 D:

1 Our dollar is worth more than theirs.

2. Our market is smaller than theirs.

3. Our retailers are greedier than theirs.

There's such a huge difference in price ><, what brand compressor do you have and what FAD does it have? What is the minimum you would use for doing a full car respray?

Mine is 2.75hp with about 14cfm and tank is maybe 50 litres. Belt drive single cylinder. Biggest you can run on single phase, needs 15 amp power point.

It works just fine and is all I need. No pressure drop if I'm doing big jobs but I've always been careful to choose guns that don't have massive air requirements.

I've got a 3 cyl belt drive that is 15A single phase 255 FAD (about 15CFM I think) with 70L tank that was near new & cost $400 from evilbay. I also just bought a near new 2 cyl direct drive 15A single phase with 50L tank, evilbay purchase as well for $125.

Bargains are there to be had providing you have the time to be patient. Just do your research on which are the more reputable brands so you don't buy complete junk...

This is the one I got from eBay and picked up at the local store, I've researched on brands but I can't really find any of the reputable ones on eBay and when I do, it's way more expensive than the general ones listed on eBay..

Do you guys have any suggestions on brands? If I wanted to run an air fed mask is my compressor good enough:?

Probably not and you'd need special filtration to get the air to a breathable standard. I have a 2 man SAS type system which works just fine. They are expensive though, especially here. Freight would be a killer but it may be worth looking ex the US and using a freight consolidation service like Bongo or PriceUSA.

I have devilbiss guns and respirator and struggle with a 15 cfm compressor (gus need 12 & resp needs 6). My respirator has a belt mounted activated charcoal filter which works great so long as the compressor isn't sucking in overspray.

Re. Brands, look out for McMillan, peerless, Royce to name a few. I got an AirMac as the pump looked the same as the Royce ones but were often cheaper and its been great. Renegade look like they are the same deal

Oh thanks, I kinda figured they were the better brands but it seems my compressor will do fine for the time being. I never realised the ampage of compressors which could have really done some damage. It states on my compressor that it takes 12.5 amps? What does this mean? It plugs straight into my normal household socket. Is it safe? Do I need to upgrade the socket? How much does it normally cost to get 15 amps?
