Hey guys. I have a question about the ingersoll rand t30 2 stage 80 gallon compressor. I bought it on Craigslist and it has a 5 hp motor on it and I know it came with a 7.5 hp from the factory. I'm guessing the person that had it before me put a new motor. Will this put stress on the motor pump? Also should they have changed the pulleys? Also is a 5 hp enough for painting with sata hvlps and rp? Or should I sell it to a friend and buy a 7.5 hp?

It should be fine as long as the motor is rated for 100% duty cycle. At higher psi you won't get the CFM output of a 7.5hp motor driving the same pump, but it probably won't matter.

So it will be fine while using my satas? It has a leeson motor on it. Made in USA. I don't want it to fall short. Or should I sell it and get a 7.5?

Is a single stage better or 2 stage for painting?

A 2 stage will get you to a little higher PSI, and it is slightly more efficient than a single stage. However, I'm not sure the extra cost is worth it with the energy efficient motors being used nowadays.
Not knowing much in the way of details about your pump and pulleys, I can't say if it will generate enough CFM for your needs.

For a SATA HVLP gun that's kind of cutting it close...

What is the best brand compressor in your guys opinion? Champion? Ingersoll? 2 stage or 1 stage?

Each of the big name brands have very good models in their mid to high end range. I think highly of Ingersoll but I would never buy one of their small single-stage compressors. Quincy is also good. The commercial Campbell-Hausfeld compressors are also very good.

Go two-stage, you will regret not having the PSI headroom if you ever want to do sandblasting or if you have to run an air tool (like a small jackhammer).

Will the 2 stage put out less cfm when the pump is on?
