Sprayed some epoxy for the first time this weekend. 50% epoxy, 50% hardened, 10% (or less) medium reducer. Temps were 70-85, high humidity. Took 16 hrs to get past the tacky stage, and another 4 hrs before I felt comfortable wet sanding. Is this normal?

Also, when I started sanding (600 wet) it took off a top layer that was softer and lighter in color and revealed a darker grey underneath. It's almost as if the epoxy has separated leaving a thin light grey film on top. The light stuff gummed up the paper fast. But once I got it off the dark grey was solid and sanded well.

Again, is this normal?

The dry time is around 12 hours before wet sanding. If no airflow and high humidity then sure it can take longer. It's the nature of epoxy, there's really no such thing as a fast drying epoxy. I don't think I've ever touched epoxy before 24 hours and part of that out in the sun drying.

I have not had any sandpaper clogging when wet sanding but I use 320-400 grit and after longer dry time with sunlight helping.

Hey Chris....

What is the recommended ratio for using the Tamco DTA epoxy as a sealer. I have seen where people say they are reducing it as much as 1:1:1. But there is no mention of reducer on the tech sheets.

Thanks.

I'd actually be surprised to hear of anyone reducing it 1:1:1 for sealing - this epoxy levels out so flat you really don't need to reduce it BUT if you want to around 5% is plenty.

Sorry. 1:1:1 is the ********** stuff. Thanks for the information, added to my notes.

Figured out what happened the last time I used the epoxy primer. It looks like I added “Final Wipe” instead of reducer. Almost did it again this weekend. The labels on the two cans are basically the same with only the “Medium Reducer” and “Final Wipe” being different. I added reducer in a hurry and probably just grabbed the wrong can.

Used some of the primer this weekend. Everything went great. Ready to sand the next morning.
