That gun is an air hog. Calls for 15 CFM @ 23 PSI to operate correctly.

settings vary depending on a whole long list of factors...
viscosity temps inside the booth or garage area size panel or job the painter etc etc im not familiar with that gun or the knob turns but generally you can test your pattern shape to get close. ill see if i can find a photo for you Experienced Trained Certified

Thank you guys for the input.
I did 3 coats of clear today on the tub I have had no problem geting a nice cigar shape patern from the gun my problem is dry spray. there seems to be no happy medium between dry and orange peel if i slow down i can eventualy get runs. but i seem unable to lay down a nice glass finish that flows out into somthing that may pass muster at the local car shows....im still into lots of color sanding to get that glass i want.....with that comes the chance i break thru again. Perhaps im expecting to much from this gun...it shoots primer and base great. Today i went from 15psi with the trigger pulled all the way to 25 psi and adjusted the fluid flow from full open to 2 turns in. this is driving me nuts. Perhaps a better clear gun that is more forgiving and capable. Ive built this car from the ground up apart from the trany. I wont give up till its what i want. |

Thanks 68 i have a 60 gal craftsman that feeds into a seperate 33 gal tank the comp puts out 13 cfm at 40 psi and the gun is rated at 13 cfm at 23 psi the way i have it set up the comp only came on a few times during 3 coat of clear. and i never lost presure at my gun seting. Never have i had any contaminate at the second tank or filter. i seem to be able to pull the trigger on the gun for 20 mins with just air at 23psi before the comp comes on for a few mins. A few pics of my set up. The 60 gallon comp feeds the 33 gal red tank at 150 psi then its got a filter and regulator out of the red tank thats at 50 psi. then the regulator at the gun is set at the 18 psi range....and ive played with it. my total galls is 93....and the comp hardly is working....i think i have good volume. |

Based on you comment about "pull the trigger on the gun for 20 mins with just air at 23psi" sounds like you have enough air. The gun is somewhat suspect as I have read other having the same problem with that model and only solved it with a new gun. But others say they have achieved great results. So, not sure.
Getting slick clear right off the gun is a balancing act for sure. Not enough material you get dry spray. Too much material you get runs. Not enough air pressure you get orange peel. Too much air and you get overspray like a fogger. Add to that technique, how close to the panel you spray, how fast you move. Then add environmental conditions of temp and humidity. Yeah, definitely a 6-way balancing act, kind of like flying a helicopter. I do not know your experience level, but my advice would be to watch YouTube on gun setup and spray techniques. Setup the gun like they show in the videos. Once you get a good spray pattern with the right amount of material flowing, then spend some time adjusting your technique on scrap parts. You need to develop/adjust you technique to fit this gun. Adjustments to the gun can only do so much. If you can't get the clear to lay down like you want, you can always lay a couple of extra coats, making it easier to cut-n-buff without burning though. Or you could cut it down and respray with one good coat and see what you get. You will need to practice before trying this though, as clear acts different on cut clear than on basecoat. |

Thank you all for the replies
Im taking my time wet sanding the RE clear job....june in florida is no fun. A few hours every day. As has been said its a balancing act to get it right.....perhaps its my lack of skill and experiance....but i seem to be able to shoot single panels ok Pic of toyota tail gate. If indeed i do break thru again and have to re clear....how much am i affecting the color by doing it.....im shooting doors and fenders hood etc seperate and in the future. Btw...if break thru happens im thinking supernova for a clear gun. At least at that point the gun is ruled out and its my skill that need work. |

Hey, that's looking pretty darn good for a home job, sprayed outside, in the FL summer.
