I would like to know, in your guys' opinion, what is the quietest 80 gallon air compressor on the market right now? I'm looking into buying one, but I want one that runs fairly quiet.

Well, the quietest ones I've heard so far is Eaton's Silent Air Series of compressors. Here's a link... https://www.eatoncompressor.com/index.p ... ath=68_243 Essentially what they are doing is making an separate intake box to get rid of the intake noise. The other half of their equation is the fact that they use compressors is they underdrive their large design compressor with an average 600 rpm motor speed. I've been following Eaton for years now and I'm fairly sure my next big compressor is going to be an Eaton. Now, honestly, you could probably put together all the components that you would see in one of the Silent Air Series compressors but if you do the math you'd end up spending about the same, and of course you'd have no 5 year warranty on your set-up. And yeah, yeah, I know there is some controversy about them and the use of Chinese parts in their builds. I don't think you can get away from that with almost any compressor on the market. And, no, I don't sell these things or get commissions off them.....

I have a Eaton 5HP and love it.
But it's not very quiet like I thought it was suppose to be.
They don't use the typical "reed" type valves, they use a better
system of steel valves, but they are louder.

If the budget allows for it, the scroll compressors are noticeably quieter than piston compressors.

You can also build an enclosure for your compressor but you have to have a baffle system that both shunts the sound waves and allows proper ventilation. Mounting on shock mounts also lessens noise transmitted/amplified through the building structure. So there are ways to quiet them down ;-)

I have mine in a machine room underneath my garage and man that thing is loud so I'm glad it's down there. All you hear inside the garage is a low rumble.

Last year I had to buy a new compressor. I looked at various types and eventually made a choice, which I've been more than happy with. However, there was one brand that really impressed me with quietness and quality.

This is the one I was looking at:

Amazingly quiet and quite impressive specifications. A bit dear though and I went for the cheaper, noisier alternative.

Worth considering, though, if noise is a major factor.
