Firstly im a complete newbe when it comes to spray guns. I have done a few spray can touch up jobs with good results on personal or friends cars.

Im just not getting the spray gun malarky. tonight i thought ill try out the guns i got using water, seemed to come out of gun like a spray can, I used my 25L compressor too (i have a 100L also) , Iv read 25L wont keep up but for what ill be doing small panels it seems to work ok .. slow maybe but thats not an issue.

Just what am i missing or missreading or will it come to light when i use paint instead of water??

cheers RSMVD

Make sure the inlet pressure to your gun (PSI) is at least as high as what
the gun you are using calls for. They're all different.
Also, with HVLP's you need enough CFM. Most don't get enough using
normal hoses and fittings. But you can overcome these losses by running
higher pressure to the gun (like 60-70 PSI) then reducing it there,
at the gun, with a regulator. That will get you the CFM the gun needs.

Well i had ago with some primer last night, i had compressor running 80psi to the gun and by reducing the inlet on the gun and playing about with the other two knobs i got a reasonable fan spray, well better than a spray can anyway. managed to get a good covering too.
No regulator but im sure in time im going to understand why one is maybe needed lol but for the time being if the base and clear go one like the primer did happy days.

Cheers

You really need a regulator at the gun to dial it in
and be able to repeat the same later.
Or do like I do and use a removable gage at the gun to
adjust at the compressor till getting the right PSI at the gun.
But I have larger than standard fittings too
for less CFM loss.
And remember, that PSI spec at the gun is read with the trigger pulled.

Thanks JC thats what iv been trying to tell the guy in the paint shop i want, as buying 3 regulators for the guns i have and for what I do just isnt worth it. @ £49 a pop. There not too helpful in there and the only paint shop near by.

Well call it luck but i managed to get a very decent finish on a half wing and part of a bumper i just done using your advice. far better coverage than using spray cans for sure. no orange peel effect either. May have used more paint than needed (150ml) for about 3 squared feet but over all happy with what i done.

cheers again RSMVD
