I'm getting ready to paint a 73 vette. The owner wants racing stripes. I've only done stripes once before. He's concerned with being able to see and feel the hard edge of the stripe. Is there any tricks to avoid the hard line? Maybe 3 coats of clear, wet sand, and 3 more coats? Any tips, tricks, and advice would be much appreciated.

Correct, enough clear to sand it flat should do the trick for you. Not sure you need six coats though, seems like a lot. I'd probably do two wet coats, sand it with 1000 then two more wet coats.

Are you putting the stripes directly over the base color, or are you shooting a barrier like DBC500 intercoat clear, first?

The base color is gm 914 silver. The stripes will be black. I'm open to ideas. I was gonna spray the car silver mask for stripes then paint the black. If I did it in reverse order it will be less taping, but I'm worried about film thickness trying to cover black. What does the intercoat do?

it'll protect the base when you tape over it. Especially metallics...tape can mess it up so the intercoat is good insurance.
