I'm changing colors of an old sportscar. The plan is to paint the engine bay, trunk, interior, and underneath the lids with straight urethane color. I would like to add a urethane clear to the body panels and jams. I gotten several different ideas on how to accomplish this.
1. Shoot the clear after 3 coats of color in the same gun without waiting.
2. Wait 1-2 hours after panting the color. Then shoot the clear. No sanding.
3. Wait 2-3 days after painting color. Wet sand any imperfections or junk out of the paint, then shoot the clear.

Seems that option three is alot more work but may yield a better paint job especially since it is a light color. It would give the chance to fix any screwups and level the paint surface. I am concerned about adhesion problems of the clear later on. What grit wet sand paper that would be optimal to sand the color and still provide tooth for the clearcoat? Thanks in advance for your advise.

Kirker brand urethane says to clear within 24 hrs.
(I don't know about other brands)
I was told by an expert to wait overnight is better.
That's what I do, wait more than several hours to let it de-gas
but less than 24 so it still has a good bond.
I paint the color in the evening, and the clear the next morning.
That has worked best for me, especially with metallics.
With metallics, clear to soon and the clear will disturb the flake
and mottle it. 8)

do you need to scuff or sand the kirker before clear?

No, not if you clear it within 24 hrs.
