Ok, I have finally gotten down to what I think is the root cause of this problem. This guy I a painting the car for did all his own body work and primed all the parts and just wanted me to paint. Well he brought me some more piece parts. The parts were in the same primer, the first thing I did was see if I could push my finger nail through it and low and behold I could push my nail into it and dent it just like I could the clear.
He used a primer called 5 star I do not know if he mixed it wrong had a bad batch or what but I believe this is the root cause. Last edited by ricke79630 on Sat Feb 05, 2011 7:01 pm, edited 2 times in total.

There are more than one type of primer using the name 5 Star. This wouldn't be rattle can primer would it?
You need to find out "exactly" what products he used from metal on up. This is why most guys will not accept prep work done by others. 1968 Coronet R/T

I think this is why I haven't had quite the results everyone else has had. The basecoat I used wasn't very good. Now that the shrinking appears to be over, I've buffed and looks great. I've got a '68 Cougar coming my way soon. I'm using PPG basecoat on it and universal clear. I can't wait to see how the clear works out using a better basecoat.

There are many good products on the market today and the reason guys tend to stick with certain ones is because they know by experience that it is a winning combination. This goes for spray guns, tools, paint, primers, clears, and techniques as well. So a safe beginning point is to follow what a pro is doing and to use the same products he uses.
For newbies and new customers "sticker shock" is the hardest thing to overcome. Quality products have some hefty price tags and everyone hates parting with their money. I have had customers tell me they found the same color paint a lot cheaper and then have to educate them as to why I won't use those products. This is the danger when someone does their own prep work. Usually they spent as little as possible on materials and often times purchased products that will not provide a suitable foundation or are not compatible one with another. 1968 Coronet R/T
