Good advice! I had to deal with the same issue and quickly learned it's hard to pull the metal out in that area and the little studs starting making holes. I started using a 1/4" think piece of metal about 1-2" long. And instead of a slide-hammer, I attached to a come-along and tree, applied tension and began "working" the metal with gentle tapping.

I ended up welding the collar onto my cheap puller that came with the HF stud gun kit a few years ago. Good idea bobby.
