I know this topic has been brought up before but How much paint will I need for a Hood, and roof of a car. Its a 79 Cutlass so there is a bit to the size. I just want to paint the Gold which is on the car in the picture below. My car is all white. I dont want it to be show quality, I just want it to look decent. The paint I have now is in good shape.

Will I be able to just paint over the white, or will I need primer as well? Any tips you can give me would be great.

Figure 7 ounces of sprayable mix per panel, per coat; you can multiply that by 1.5 for those parts if you want...so let's say 11 ounces per panel..two surfaces so 22 ounces per...figure 3 coats of base if shooting white so 66 ounces. I'd say a quart of white plus reducer for the color. Same basic idea for primer and clear...yeah you should prep those surfaces and seal them with a light grey sealer/primer before shooting white. Going to require blending into the rest of the car too; and at that point I'd probably just paint the whole thing...

Well the car is already solid white. I just want to add the gold to it.

This is what it looks like now.

If you are certain the paint is now in good condition, you can wash the car thoroughly, wet sand the clear with 600grit to remove any shine (use scotchbrite in hard to reach places), wash the car again and let dry.
Wipe with W&G remover and let dry, then spray your base.

What kind of soap to use, just like some plain dish soap?

Thanks guys for the help. I can't wait to get this thing painted up. I want to do this soon, well end of april-ish, so I have it painted for the carshow season.

Since I bought the car back in 2001 ive wanted it painted now I have the basic knowledge and abilitys and I hope I dont mess it up. The paint code I have for it companys are having a hard time matching it, but TCP Global seems like my best option so far.

Most every paint code has alternates, some as many as several.
without looking at and matching the color chips against the existing
vehicle there's no way to tell which one.
DuPont uses the Vin No. to tell which one but I find looking
at the actual color chips is much more accurate.
I usually take the gas cap door with me to the paint store and
compare it out in the sun light.

That gold is available in DBC, PPG code 24430. Go to your jobber and get it, no need to buy on-line. Or pick any paint company you prefer and buy it locally.

Well, I'm looking to do this in a month or so. I'm not going to repaint the white. I'm just going to paint the gold ontop of the white.

The car is just a driver, Maybe bring to a car show here or there.

I plan on buying the paint from automotive touchup as a premixed ready to spray. Will a quart do?

Also will I be able to clear the whole car after I paint the gold?
