Hi,
I am about to have my pickup cab media blasted, immediately after which I will put it epoxy primer. After bodywork I will shoot 2K urethane primer, then bc/cc. My question is, at which step do I apply my seam sealer? On bare steel? Can I do it after epoxy?
Thanks,
Bryan
When to apply seam sealer?

you should apply sealer over sanded primer before paint. it is one of the last steps before spraying paint.

Oh, so on top of the 2k urethane right before base coat? |

yep right on the sanded primer prior to spraying your base.

It doesn't have to be sanded for the seam sealer to stick but yes its one of the last operations before the paint shop.

You'd want seam sealer to be put on after primer and before base coat? Wouldn't you want some type of primer/sealer/surfacer to cover the variation between the sanded 2K and the seam sealer?
I'm not a professional body guy. But, my thought of putting on seam sealer would be after epoxy and before 2K primer. So this way the entire surface is a uniform material. What would be the drawback to applying seam sealer under the 2K? thanks, Mark |

You spray base over the seam sealer. Never skimp on materials. Buy quality paintable seam sealer. That is the process collision techs use.

there is no reason to prime overtop of sealer. if you did you would be creating more work for yourself by having to sand the uneven surface some sealers leave. prep the car completly ready for paint, seal the joints, then mask and spray. as for not sanding the primer before sealer, I have seen sealer completly fail and seperate from people not sanding paint or primer prior to putting on their sealer, therefore I ALWAYS scuff primer before sealing.

I've never had a problem but like I said use quality materials. I've been doing heavy collision for 12 years.
