Hi all,
I'm restoring a '74 beetle and would like to take a break and enjoy the car for awhile.
Rather than slapping on a cheap paint job I would like to apply a clear coat over the old paint as a temporary preservative.

It's mostly original paint with some primer showing through, I'm not a big fan of the patina look but I would like to use a flat clear coat so it isn't so noticeable.

Since it's only going to be temporary and I'll assume is all coming off when you finish the resto then sounds like the perfect job for acrylic lacquer. Fast, cheap and easy. Just add some flatting base and use a fairly fast thinner.

Won't do anything for the rust, though.

It's not very rusty.
A couple bought it new and for whatever reason quit driving it.
Sat under their shed until the early 2000's then someone bought it and it sat outside for about 5 years and went through a few owners.

There is a small amount of exterior rust spots besides the rear fenders and aprons but they are just surface rust and smaller than a dime.

I've pondered upon using rustoleum red on them before the clear.
But we're talking 6-8 month temporary clear so idk.
The rear apron and fenders will be swapped out before the spray.

6-8 months? I wouldn't bother. If you're doing a resto then it will all come off anyway. Give it a polish and leave it at that for the moment.

Yeah just long enough to make it through the winter.
My shop isn't climate controlled and it is already cooling down in my area.
I won't be able to strip and paint until next year after the pollen is gone.
I figured I'd go ahead and drive it some since I have the chassis done.

I appreciate your input.
I may clear it but I also might just touch up the few rough surface areas and the replace ment panels until next year.
