Did a few searches and came up empty.

I'm going to repaint my daughter's Camry. How much base coat and clear coat should this job require? I'll probably do three coats of base and two of clear. Aren't repainting the jambs or anything like that. We're sticking with the original color.

Thanks.

I'm doing an overall paint job in the original color, i.e, no jambs, etc. Two to three coats of base (cashmere beige metallic) and two coats of clear. Sherwin-Williams Dimensions Pro (acrylic urethane). Guys at the paint store will ask me how much I need, and I respond, "I don't know. You tell me."

As far how good of a painter I am, my work looks outstanding (from five feet away).

I'm not failure with Sherwin-Williams Dimensions Pro no local jober and Its too expensive for me.

I thought you did a better job than a 5 footer on the truck ? looks like it in the pictures any way.... I would try to find some cheaper materials if I wear you try some DuPont's Omni line or the one above Omni great for beginners in my opinion cheaper any way.

Base coats can be reduced a lot makes more paint 3 qts can easily make 5 spray-able.
Some can be thinned out more some not at all from what I have heard?
Clear is another story single gallon should do a whole big car with at least two coats smaller car more coats or more left over.....you know ?

More coats of clear doesn't make the job better but I like an as sprayed look too with just sanding/polishing a nib here or there. I have changed my mind and opinion a LOT over a short period of time, People want best job possible but yet run cars into ground and get rid of them quickly but yet want a $10,000 paint job its just not practice able and make money.

Say your only painting car for Bad peeling clear on Roof and or a hood or a trunk panel but nothing else on the car no need too repaint sides just scuff and reclear and just deal were Base has to be reapplied on roof, hood or trunk.
A job like this would take much less base coat and primers than it would Clear because you only need to repair the damaged area and blend into other existing panels IF your not concerned with dead nuts on color match but you can get really close if not dead on with spray out cards. My Point being you may not need to paint whole entire car especially if your doing the same color that's the benefit of the Base coat clear coat system and why the question of how much paint do I need is a Trick question no one like to answer.

Just fix what needs to be fixed by blending and re clear whole car, lots cheaper! and looks great! or Fix what need fixed, clear what has to be cleared and Polish the rest! cheaper yet! cheaper is better :) takes a while to come up with that attitude but you will after a few completes and fixing your own mistakes then seeing your work get **** on and wanna be painters point out mistakes because every one is the best painter in the world and then finally seeing your work get abused by the owner it all starts to set in.

The truck doesn't look bad. Just needs some cut and buff. I decided to spray two more coats of clear on the roof and hood, the cut and buff. The vertical panels don't have too much OP, so a light C&B. The roof and hood , due to my limited reach and the difficulty in painting those, need a higher level of cutting. Two more coats is insurance.

Back to the Camry. There are enough little dents on the car that by the time I fix those, most of the panels will need painting. Overall is better in this situation.
