The bare metal door edge contour should match the fender and quarter in bare metal. If your filler is high at the door edge due to poor metal work, then it won't line up with the adjacent panel now. Nothing says hackwork like thick panel edges. If a car is just a beater then cave it and pave it.

The damage I had to repair on this door also had some damage on the quarter which is also going to have filler. It will line up once done.

I feel like if I smashed it in with a hammer it would require thicker amounts of filler.

Do I round off the tip of the doors that was created from blocking the filler or do you leave it pointy?
