Hey guys I need help with my project car. It's a 1974 Chevy nova, it's basically stripped down to the metal.i need to know what steps to take next. It's been sitting out in the sun for over a year. So It does surface rust, which I have sanded down. What should I do next? Should I use a chemical to netrualize the rust?

Is the rust just flash rust or us there actual putting in the metal?

I'm not sure what you mean by "putting in the metal"?

Surface rust will have no pitting and should sand right off. If the rust is advance it will eat little craters or pits into the metal and in such cases you will need to media blast to get all the rust out.

By the way, you need to be real careful using a grinder on a car they will leave dished marks on the surface that will show. A Dual Action Sander is what you should be using.

Ok thank you, is there away to remove grinder marks? Or dished marks?so they won't show up. Any advice helps
And for my next steps, should I media blast the pitted parts? Then, epoxy primer over everything?
Is there a chemical I should use to treat the bare metal before epoxy?

That was a typo, I meant to say " Pitting in the metal". If there's just rust on the surface, going over the car with 80 grit should remove most of it and whats left will require further attention.

The biggest problem that I see you're going to run into, is that there appears to be filler that doesn't have Primer over it. If the cars been sitting outside for an extended period of time, with bare filler on it; its going to come back to haunt you.

Some light grinding marks on bare metal can be "polished" out with 80 grit on a DA or an 8" Orbital sander. Just don't use the edge of of your pad. Deep gouges can be skimmed with filler and leveled.

As for treating the metal, stay away from any "rust converter's". Once the surface is rust free, you can prep the surface by wiping it down with a W&G remover or prepsol type of product to remove any surface contaminates.
Then you'll be ready to spray your Etch or Epoxy Primer.

Just me but I would blast any pitting rust, buzz car with DA and 80 grit, Paint with Acid etch Primmer ASAP followed by a couple coats of regular Primmer.
Sand it out reapply primer if you sand into Etch coat, do your filler work over the primer.
Do a final primer coat sand as required or a Sealer coat over entire car then shoot BC/CC

Be aware you cant put Filler over the top of Bare Acid etch and I wouldn't have Filler alone under Acid etch either.
