What grit sandpaper on a DA is best suited to take off the clear coat, and ideally prep the base coat for a recoat of clear? (And wet or dry?)

Thanks!

800 but if you don't go through the clear and just spray a few coats of 800 sanded clear it will look new

Interesting. I always thought this was virtually impossible to do. One sand-through
on metallic paint and it will be ruined and need re-basing...?

I'm wondering why he needs to take the clear off ? i'm with night train there will be no saving the color. as Dave suggested if the clear is good then sand with 800 and reshoot clear.

Uhhhh...if that current clear is peeling off that usually means the base has failed and "let go" of the clear..... just sayin.....

clear is peeling in spots due to a bad repair at one point. I just want to get down to the base and respray. It's non metalic white paint.

your going to need to respray the base. its going to be almost impossible to sand the clear off and leave the base. if you do happen to leave the base the white is going to be dirty. a dark color and you might get away with it but white I don't think so.
