i guess if your orange peel is so bad that you would see the orange peel after clearing best to sand it and just base over it sanded with 800

COOL HANDLES, Why don't you try a couple light coats as you stated and see how it works. you might try a little more air pressure and or reduce your epoxy a little more. some times you need to be a scientist and experiment a little.
