Folks,

Have been painting for a while and have painted a few cars, painted many many guitars.

Until recently (through this forum) I found out you do not have to body fill on metal but can in fact fill over an epoxy primer - but not etch primer

Having only learnt this new fact, if I am do body filling with a filler, what is the minimum grit size one recommends to scuff for adhesion (220 grit ??) or swill a scratch pad (3m scotchbrite) suffice. Can you body fill over top coats, clear etc if the surfaced is scuffed well enough.

Thanks for any info

Steve

80 grit on a DA sander over bare metal
If you spray epoxy primer first to cover bare metal you do not need to sand the epoxy if you stay within the "re-coat" window. Different brands have different lengths of time for re-coating their epoxy primers so you need to read your tech sheet for your particular product.
