Hello!

I recently sprayed some PPG DBC base for a 2017 Volvo and wasn't very happy with the color matching that was done, especially considering the paint was $130 for a pint! I haven't color blended yet because I'm worried about how far off this is. When the paint's reflecting the flake it matches nearly perfectly. The color is Volvo Magic Blue.

Is this much variance to be expected or should try to get the shop to remix it?

Thanks!

did you buy this paint on line or from a local jobber? it does look off quite a lot, the color can change from the view angle some metallic can be a real pain, colors can change buy how its applied dry or wet and in-between. there should be several shades of this color called variants. a jobber will have them in cards its best to take something of your car and take it into the jobber and match up to the variant cards as close as you can. a good jobber can modify this further to get it closer if needed. then yes you need to blend.

Yeah, I'd definitely agree with what was just said there.... stock paint codes just don't cut it when you are trying to match these modern paints with metallics. I now always get the gas cap door from the car and take it in directly to the jobber for matching. I even have a favorite counter guy there that's just a little more in tune with helping me get that variant tweeked just right. Even at that....blending out is a must....no abrupt stops like you've got there.

Great, thanks for the replies! Are they able to re-tint the existing pint or will it need to be a fresh mix?

They will be able to tint the existing pint. Just take a panel and the leftover paint and they will get it done.

As said above, always compare the variants.
Also the flop in the paint can do what you described.
The paint guy can add flop control to the paint.
Also, a little flattener to the base helps with flop.
and like said above, never paint to the edge of an adjacent panel,
blend into the door some and clear the entire door.

Ppg envirobase is the way to go.solvent is a dead technology at this point.and ill almost guarantee that's what the car was sprayed in from Volvo.
