there are a few different types of thinner:
basecoat thinner (for basecoat)
2k thinner for 2k hs primer/clear

my question is, what would happen if i put basecoat thinner in 2k primer?

If you are talking about Urethane Reducer and you buy quality stuff it will work in all cases.
Never use lacquer thinner except to clean your spray gun.

no urethane reducer does not work in all basecoat...
if youre spraying a base that requires paraffin reducer you better use that.

other wise the above post is correct. if the reducer is white and milky do not ever use it in anything but basecoat

Aren't those types of basecoats really more of a 2k type material? You need both parts to make up the whole?
Dupont ChromaPremier comes to mind.
In such cases it isn't a thinner/reducer but rather an activator/catalyst.

no it is not 2k, it is actually a wax that keeps metallic controlled and such...
you can use urethane reducer in it but will look blotchy

it will still dry like normal and spray normal the metallics will just look ****.

closer to what you are refering to would be PPG DBU which uses "reactive reducer" would be considered a 2 part base

Yeah that contains paraffin wax also. And can be used in other bases containing paraffin. But I would recommend staying within the brand when it comes to paraffin.
