No, you do not want to put filler on top of a 2k primer. Also ********** does not recommend their 2k primers to be used on bare metal.

There are 2k primers out there that are Direct to Metal, but again if you go this route, do your bodywork first and then apply the 2k primer.

My personal opinion, while the epoxy is an added cost, what is the project worth to you?

Also, ********** has a forum dedicated specifically to their products.

There are a ton of different ways you can do the job, but the one specific way you want to do it(metal,2kprimer,filler) is not one of the "right" ways.

Yes you can put filler over epoxy with no problems.
A lot of people prefer it that way.
Some say that it will protect the metal should the filler fail,
or moisture gets to it.
I don't do it for my collision repairs because it takes more time.

I think if the metal gets moisture to it, the filler will need replacing anyway
so it's a moot point.

Most Fillers are required to go on clean bare metal not over Primer BUT many are saying that its ok to put Filler over Epoxy and I have seen why. On many occasions I have removed filler to find corrosion underneath of it. Had it been applied over Epoxy there would be no corrosion. They say Properly sanded Epoxy will give enough Tooth for the filler to hold onto.

If its much more than a skim coat over Primmer I wouldn't do it, Just one of those things your not supposed to do. By the time You get to your hi build primer on the panel or regular primer on You should be sanding the panel to get it ready for your Color and finalizing straightness.

And Yes ********** does make a Primer that goes direct over metal or DTM.

Now with all that said When you use a Acid etch primers They are all supposed to be applied Directly over bare metal then followed by a regular or Hi build Primer NOT AN EPOXY! and never have Filler directly underneath or over the Top of Acid etch primer! always over the regular Primer only.
So why its ok in this case and not the others I cant say for sure?

Which ********** 2k primer do they say goes direct to metal(minus epoxy of course).

The only one I ever saw that said "Direct to Metal" was the turbo, and I inquired about it and Barry himself said he was removing that from the label.

Guess they could all go direct to metal, but not recommended.

I spoke to Barry about the subject before when the Instructions first changed for the regular 2K as I still had the older Product that said DTM
On new instructions yes the sentence has been deleted, so NO they don't stand behind it used as a DTM any more my Bad forgot about that change. Still the same old formula though.

bsa_bob: body filler is designed (by the chemists who engineer the stuff) to go directly on metal. It's not (usually?) in their tech sheets but many people use filler over epoxy and it works well, too.

Filler is not meant to go over a 2K urethane primer.

The Tamco DTM primers I carry here (e.g. HP-5310) are 2K urethane primers and designed to be direct to metal. Not sure why some people might find that hard to believe but yes, there is a product other than epoxy that can go direct to metal. Just don't put filler over it and we'll remain friends.

Tamco also makes an incredibly good epoxy primer if you want to use that under filler but for 90% of the jobs out there it's overkill. I could sell it hard here and the margin is certainly better, but the $90 kit of 2K primer is a great product and used by hundreds of people at this site and in several shops in my town, every day. That vintage VW bus painted in my garage last summer was all Tamco, as well we've had BMWs and Porsche come through the door too. So far the paint has not fallen off any of the cars - so either I'm a reckless liar only interested in saving $110 on a $10,000 job...or the stuff actually works as designed ;-)

Tamco 2k primer is a nice product for sure. I'm not sure if you are on Instagram or not, but I see that Tamco does a lot of their advertising there. Anyways there is a gentlemen that sells the products and he basically will prime a car the tamco 2k 5310 or 5311 and THEN do all of his bodywork(lots of filler) I kind of questioned him about it, and was basically told "Tammy says its ok"

eh... no skin off my back ,lol Keep on truckin dude!

He recently posted pics and a video if priming with the 5310 that he added a **** ton of basecoat to so that he could "tint" it... Pretty sure it was mixed 1:1(basecoat/Primer) :knockout:

Its been very interesting to follow his journey!
