How much paint is enough for even coverage on a small car like a VW Golf hardtop?

What would happen if too much base and/or clear were applied?

JC CLark, from the forum, answered this very question for me on my project. His answer was 1 ounce of mixed paint per square foot of surface. I did some basic estimated calculations on my small car project and came up with 72 sq feet. This rule worked well for me.
- I used approx. 72 oz of mixed paint to apply 3 coats of base (3 batches of 24oz)
- I also used the same rule for clear but applied it heavier. I was still applying approx. 24oz per coat but applied 4 coats. Going to cut and buff...
It turned out well...

I have no experience and cant answer what happens if you go too heavy????
