I recently finished painting my car for the first time, and am now wetsanding it and preparing for buffing. Before that, I had to reshoot a couple of panels and my gallon of Summit racing metallic paint ran out.

I ordered another quart and used it on my hood, the final panel....and the tone is slightly different from the rest of the car. If you look at it from the right (wrong?) angle you can tell. I know that paint can vary from batch to batch but I didn't expect this. (All the prep work and primer/sealer coats were identical to the rest of the car.)

So that's disappointing. I guess there's a lesson there, though I thought they would have done a better job at Summit's supply house, especially since I ordered the two cans only a few months apart.

At any rate I'm now debating if I should make lemonade from this lemon and try painting stripes on the hood, to emphasize the difference from the rest of the car rather than hope no one notices.

Are there some particularly good videos and tutorials out there I can go over? I've done some preliminary searches but there's a lot of cruft and it's hard to sift through the good from the bad.

Try the SEARCH function. All these topics are covered and there is an Airbrush/Custom Painting thread as well.

Ok, I'll look there.

Here's what I mean by different tones. The hood (and the roof) were painted using the newer paint and you can see how much lighter it is. I got an accidental two-tone paint job...

Ordering paint from places like that is a crap shoot at best. Definitely looks like two different colors of paint sprayed on that car.
Do you have enough of the "new" paint for the stripes? You may find if you order another quart you will then have a 3-tone paint job.

Say you wanted White stripes? or Silver on your hood, roof and trunk.
Usually you'd spray your White or silver first let it Dry and put down an Intercoat clear let that dry scuff it and add your masking to make your Stripes or design, Then finish painting the rest of the car with your Blue. After it kicks you pull the Masking to reveal your stripes then Clear Coat the whole thing.
Sounds simple right? learning your Flash times and when its safe to start masking, learning when to pull your masking is a trick! as are dealing with Tape lines!

There is more, a lot more too it but that's the quick Nasty. Check out the other forum about customizing airbrushing there are good books on it too as well as videos.

I would return unused paint to Summit tell them where to stick it and Find a good local Jobber for Paint supplies! This is exactly why I buy my Primers and clears in bulk on internet and all my Bases at local jobber! So I can go get More asap when I need it Mixed by same person1!
Ask Summit for the Mix combo take it to your jobber with the car ask them to match the good part as best they can and repaint the Hood and Roof. Maybe even go ahead with your plan and do the Stripes? all you have to do is Scuff it good at this point to put more on. Learning how to fix your mistakes is all part of the game.
Better luck next time

The Car doesn't look bad by the way if you over look the mismatch.
"SEM" makes a good Rattle can Trim paint by the way, Works great looks good stands up to Sun well.

Thanks for commiserating. I had the car masked off when I did the hood and roof, and when mixing the new paint it didn't strike me as being wrong...imagine my surprise when I unmasked.

Still debating whether to go with stripes or just live with it. After all, as '68 Coronet says if I get another batch from Summit I'll be looking at a three tone job. At that point I may as well paint every panel a different color and really get jaws dropping. This car is a daily driver and considering I repainted it because of a terrible factory job, paint peeling etc, it's a big step up, multi-tones included.

Summit gets their paint from Kirker I believe, and it's a real surprise a big player would have that much variation between batches, really careless IMO. Live and learn.

Larry
Seriously it dosen't look all that bad after all that prep work though I would scuff it and re-shoot it just for spite. I am sure a local jobber could match the good blue or at least get a closer color match that wouldn't show so bad.

Check out that Black Trim paint I was talking about I like the stuff my self it really takes your paint job up a notch. Its cheap easy to do thing to do with the Black trim even on the bare spots on the aluminum trim just scuff and shoot works on Plastic parts too Takes that sun faded black plastic under the wipers and makes it look new again.

not picking on you but this could and probably would end bad, the step you missed would be intercoat basecoat over the silver protecting metallics from adhesive,

but the absolute best way would be to paint your body color and clear, let dry a day or 2 sand with 800 mask your stripes and spray stripe color then unmask and clear, wait another 2 days sand tape lines smooth with 800 and the rest of the panel then clear again.

Dave Yup your a 110% right :goodjob: I forgot to mention Inter coat clear step WOOPS! :whoops: I went back and edited the post. :allgood: :knockout:

Chaulk it up to another elderly moment! dang that's the second one in two weeks! Two weeks ago I tried to Crush/sever my left hand Ring finger off!
Doc said I did a really good job on it too! as he removed all the tiny crushed bone splinters and Put Two steel pins in it to hold it all together for me while it heals. :flatten: :knockout:

I like your way though forget the inter coat clear just use reg clear, You do a Heck of a Lot of custom work than I will ever do but do you feel its best to put Stripes on after the main coat or before as I explained? or does it not matter?
