Depending on the pearl it can be really hard to get it to distribute evenly through a mix of clear coat -- and you end up with blotchy patches where the pearl is concentrated.

For a newbie or occasional painter the safest bet is to do the pearl additive in an intercoat or clear base product.

chris youre probablly 100% correct on that.

it does work for me. but i been painting 30 years too.

if you want to keep it simple, look at pictures of "GM synergy green."
its just a base and clear. ive sprayed it before and its pretty sweet.

I agree with Chris, but I always used clear coat for pearls and candies . the rage here several years ago was pearl over a oem finish. I would just sand the oem paint and shoot the pearl in a clear coat, worked perfect. nothing beats years of experience.

Now here’s a question way off in left field, have you ever seen an oil slick on a mud puddle after it rains , all the swirly metallic colors ? Any way to paint that on a car ? Without the oil.

For that I used this in the past..... http://www.motostorm.com/prismafec.html There pics. there show it over a very coarse metallic. It looks more like what you are talking about over finer metallic.

When I was a kid in the late 60’s my Dad had a 65 Impala in navy blue and it was all rainbowed like that, my Dad told me the sun turned the paint.

Well, back in "the day" I was always told that it was more like a "contamination" in aged lacquers/enamels that would mildly cause that effect. Guys used to do some pretty strange things with paints back then. They would let paint set out open overnight letting the top of the liquid thicken, then stir it back in, reduce pressure and shoot. Gun would literally throw cobwebs out.... A friend had an old late 60's VW Beetle which he did in flat blood red with black spider webs all over it. Kind of looked like SpiderMan meets the Adams Family.
