Dawn will work if its not real thick grease and a bunch of dirt mixed.
You have to remove most of the heavy gunk first,,,and then scrub it pretty good with hot soapy water,,,but yes it will work.
I would try to find something stronger to start with if you can get it.

Lacquer thinner "DOES" leave residues behind. (contrary to what most people believe) I too, used it for years without an issue, then one day it came back to bite me. Don't use it for cleaning, (At least, not the final cleaning.) Dawn dish soap works really good and rinses the stuff away. It's mostly what I use anymore. JC.

I guess I assumed that soap would leave a minor residue or film the paint might not stick to, obviously I'm wrong.
Fortunately when I built the house I plumbed a hot & cold spigot on the outside of the garage, works great for washing the car and will work well for this clean up too. It's just the usual gunk & grime built up in the wheel wells, 30 years of dirt, crap, brake fluid and who knows what. The trunk area looks like some one dumped a quart of oil and then it collected dirt on top of that. I'm sure soap and hot water will work fine, funny how you overthink things sometimes! Would TSP be OK or is it too aggressive? BTW, here's it's current state, all glass removed, stripped almost completely except rear end and tank, coming out soon. [/img] That fender I brought back with a shrinking disc I bought from John Kelly, what an amazing tool! The filler is very thin, maybe a 1/16th thick. The rocker & the lower rear quarter have been cut out & patch panels welded in as well. This car has 10 layers of paint on it, 4 top cotes and 6 primer/filler whatever cotes, it's a pain to say the least as far as removal goes. Correct me if Im wrong,,,but I dont think TSP is made for grease.
I think its made for mold and mildew. |

That TSP is good stuff, if you buy the powder (not the pre-mixed)
you can mix it to any strength. Get it to strong and it WILL take the paint off with it. I don't think there's a overall better cleaner out there. But just like the soap, just make sure you rinse it off thoroughly, that's the key. PS. ODG: No, it's not good for cleaning your fish. JC.

I didnt think it would cut grease?????????????????
O well |

Oh yes, It'll cut most anything if you mix it right.
It'll eat your hands up too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trisodium_phosphate JC.

I've used a TSP "no rinse" substitute a lot in interoir painting wall prep - stuff work's the best of anything I've found at removing tobacco staining on wall (the absolute worst thing to paint over, sharpie marker's a close second).
works very well on greasy kitchens & slimy bathrooms, sounds glamorous huh! Maybe I'll try both, simple Green & TSP. Is ODG catching moldy fish? Who'd pay for a charter like that |

It's not the fish that are old and moldy in that boat JC.

I'll toss a couple of pennies in just FYI. PPG has a more aggressive and slower evaporating (don't use it for final wipe) W/G remover, DX440. Some places don't stock it but it is easy to get. It costs ~ the same as 330.
