Yeah, I have a good compressor too and that leads me to believe Ryan's compressor may not be putting out enough CFM to handle his gun.
Like stated earlier the pressure rating on the compressor really doesn't matter its the volume of air it puts out.

If he's run a DA like he said then he has enough air to
get a correct psi reading for at least the first couple of seconds.
I don't think it's the compressor. 8)

Although the compressor is just about the smallest size you can get away with......I don't think his compressor is at fault either. I have a 25 year old Sears 20 gallon compressor approx 3 hp and I was able to panel paint with no problems. My 60-gallon 3hp (12CFM) compressor kicks on every few minutes with these guns painting large sections, they use hardley any air! :D

It sounds like you have a restriction somewhere, in your hose fittings, line, reg., somwhere. You can't get enough flow to keep the pressure up. I had this happen with a super restrictive 3/8" plumbing setup w/ inline water filter.

Are you using the bubble type filter like this?

Or some other inline filter that looks like a fuel filter?

A Bubble filter like posted above, Astro brand

I revisited it somewhat tonight and maybe it was all in my mind:
The regulator on my compressor was set to 80psi, I moved to up to 110. Took off air filter. I can't remember if I played with air nob on gun or not, it any case the pressure was ~21psi when I hooked it up and it was easy to adjust. I thought it was the filter but I hooked back up with filter didn not effect pressure. I broke out the 1.4 tip gun and set to 20psi with air open and sprayed my sealer coat. Not sure exactly what was going on the first time, I thought I was making large changes to diapham regulator and not seeing anything, but I could adjust it fine with both guns today.

This is the kinda stuff that happens to me,
(even when I'm not drinking) it's frustrating.
I hope it stays this way for you. Good luck :D

OK, I still have orginal problem, 2nd time I had quit when I could get up the 21 or so where I wanted it thought it was fixed.. I wanted to try it up to 26psi today, it is what Barry of ********** recommended for the gun for spraying ********** universal clear as I was having slow flash and orange peel.

Each time with regulator on pump set at 120psi.
Same results with Astro 1.4 and 1.8 LVLP
With Astro Diapham regulator:
I only adjust from 16-21/22psi, max with regular set up around 60psi, seems to loose .5psi when turned up to 80.
With generic regular:
Always 18-19psi

Your compressor should be at 90-120 since you're using a diaphragm regulator at the gun. This makes it so you have a little more reserve pressure in the line and less noticeable pressure drop.

I wouldn't run the Astro guns at 26lbs.... they spray best at 19-22 for me, but its up to you. I get more orange peel with pressure.

Did you try running your gun STRAIGHT off the hose (with the bubble type filter attached) and the compressor regulator set around 25-28lbs? This will tell you if your gun regulator is the problem or the gun itself isn't spraying right.
