Purpose of low pressure drop coat?

Iwata actually makes a tip that will simulate a perfect drop coat, the purple tip for the lph400. Anyhow, yes it will sort of atomize at a low pressure, the idea with the drop coat is your paint lands in little wet drops. Polyester paint drops will lye flat, given that their small. If your pressure is too low, you will end up with giant paint droplets that won't lye properly. I'd use a test panel for your first few attempts. My pressure is usually set somewhere around 10 (at the gauge).I more go by sound and spray out on the paper until I have it right. But then again I've been using the iwata tip for drops coats for quite a while now. It will probably be up a few psi higher with any other.
