When the first auto darkening helmets came out in the early eighties , they worked great for stick and mig, but the high freq with tig would fry the circuit board on the cheaper helmets, but now with technology moving along even the cheap ones work ok with tig, any of the top names Hobart , miller, Jackson speedglass , optrel and arc-one make great helmets

I have only minimum tig experience and its all in the last 3 or 4 years, so this made me wonder if maybe it was just a bit of bad luck that I had with the helmets, because I tried a couple of different cheap ones, and an arc-one, all with the same result. So most of the tig welding that I have done was with a fixed lens.

I got one of these auto helmets it works ok........ I like the idea a lot and I like my helmet it works BUT!

I am experiencing loss of vision from getting old imagine that? any way I really need to go see a Eye Doctor but I am seeing double vision in my helmet why welding but only while welding is this a sign that the helmet is bad? or do I have something really wrong with my eyes and a Possible numerological condition????

I did a search about it others say cheap lenses cheap auto helmet other say its from wearing glasses under hood that makes sense to me as I cant see any thing any more without my cheaters.

Pretty common to see a reflection in the lense sometimes, just the way it is.I prefer gold lenses in a fixed helmet vs green, cuts down on double images or reflection. For someone wanting to try something different the cherokee welding helmet offers no hands freedom and you can open the shutter with your chin, pretty cool once you get used to it.I have had a couple for quite some time.

most helmets you can order a magnifing lens that replaces the stock one , that way you don`t have to wear reading glasses underneath

I found this video and started looking for a tig pen and couldn't find anyone that has them or anyone even able to get them, then today this lady called and said she found out where to get them. So if anyone is interested in getting one you can order them from Welders Service 419-535-0071 $51.75 Kathryn is the one that did the searching to find them.

The guy I bought my used mig welder from in Vegas had one of those lens's in his helmet. Think he said you can get them in various strengths just like cheater reading glasses. I looked through it and sure was better than trying to wear my readers under the helmet. The magnifying part of the lens was maybe a half inch or so strip at the bottom of the lens so if your looking at it from a ways away regular view and if close like reading the paper you have the best of both worlds. Gotta go get me one as I did some welding a couple weekends ago and my readers were a tussle inside the helmet.

Dennis, the only one on line that I could find was in the UK and with shipping it was about $108. In an earlier post I included a phone number where you can get the esab brand tig pen for $51.75 plus shipping. I don't think esab wants them sold here anymore for some reason, but she is able to get them somewhere, and is willing to ship. I have used mine with .030 rod and 1/16 rod and it works very good with both and I like it, although its not the esab, its a weld mark. They all have a similar shape and work on the same principle
