Hi Guys, haven't posted on here for quite a while, glad to see the site is still up and running. I have a project that I'm going to be getting into the requires i fabricate my own mild steel exhaust headers. I plan on buying a pipe kit of U's and bends and welding up my own because no one makes a set for this application. I have a weld pac 100 with tank reg. etc and a small acyt. set. Which would be best for welding up mild steel tubing probably 14-16 gauge. I'm a novice [had a course so long ago i can't remember the year] but I'm willing to learn .

what ever process you feel the most comfortable with, you can use oxy/acyt or mig or tig...if its low carbon mild steel use a ER70-6 filler wire

A 220volt or 230volt welder works better then a 110volt welder on all steels. Argon is the way to go. I've got a 140 Hobart that's 110volt and a 180 Lincoln that's 230volt. Night and day difference. Either welding sheet metal or 1/2" plate the higher voltage welder just burns better. Anyway mig welding with argon is the way to go but a tig is best for exhaust.

If your running mig , make sure you get a argon/co2 mix...75/25, pure argon on mig results in poor penetration and doesn`t give the weld the wetting effect, making it harder to weld than with the arg/co2 mix,

Any of the older Miller 135 autoset to the new 141 Migs will be perfect for ya....as mentioned use a mig mix ( Argon, CO2 ). You can probably find a decent used one with hardly any use on Craigslist or similar for a good price.
