I JUST FINISHED PAINTING MY CAR IN OMNI BC/CC
I PUT PLENTY OF MC161 CLEAR ON IT.
IT HAS BEEN PAINTED ABOUT 2 WEEKS NOW, BY THE WAY I PAINTED
IT IN PIECES.
THE PAINT TURNED OUT VERY GOOD
MY QUESTION IS I WILL NOT HAVE THE CAR BACK TOGETHER UNTIL
EARLY SPRING. CAN I STILL SAND AND BUFF AFTER THET LENGTH OF TIME??
THE CAR IS A 73 CAMARO THAT I DRIVE SO I MAY BE BETTER OFF
LEAVING WELL ENOUGH ALONE.
THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP ON THIS WEB SITE
EXCELLENT ADVICE THROUGHOUT THE PAINTING PROCESS.

YUP, YOU MIGHT HAVE TO WORK A LITTLE HARDER ON THE FULLY CURED PAINT (MAYbe use (whew that's a little quieter!) a compound with a foam cutting pad first). But it should work fine.

well, at the school, we wet sand with 400 grit, and then buff. u will be able to buff it. and it should turn out pretty good. make sure when u sand it u go REAL lightly. u don't wanna take the clear off.

Personally, I would not touch clear with anything rougher than 1200, If it doesn't need much, start at 2000. It is a lot better to discover you are too fine and not getting anywhere than to discover you are too coarse and you cut sand scratches into the base.

I gasped when I read that too, I start with 2000 most of the time.

Aberrant and Big Jim. Did I read that post by ford1987 right??? I was always told that if you are dropping below 1000 grit you probably need to re-shoot. It seems like it would take forever to get over 400 grit scratches in clear. Anybody else ever heard of dropping that low to cut and buff???
Metal, wood, fiberglass, we work it all... www.furniturephysicians.com We can restore the irreplaceable!

He's probably just confusing the standard grit for recoating with a starting point for buffing, I can't see anyone in their right mind starting to color sand with 400, it's insane unless the orange peel looks like the surface of the moon.

maybe they're sanding out runs with 400 grit... I start wet sanding (to remove dirt ) with 1500 grit then buff with Ardex 1000 buffing compound, then Ardex 2500 polishing compound.. the clear comes out great. |

I guess I am at this stage now..
I have a bunch of mequires "diamond cut" is that too rough? |
