I think it all depends on how level the coating is to begin with. You would only have to drop down to 1500 if you find that you are not getting the coating completely flat with the 2000. I've had some curvy recessed areas on sports cars and trucks before where I dropped down to 1200 grit.

I agree that it really depends. I like to start with 2000, if you can lay down the clear coat properly I don't think more than 2000 is necessary, but sometimes it has a bit more orange peel than you'd like. It's a matter of preference, once you do enough color sanding you'll figure out what works best for you.

2000 has worked g0od for me, but there a few areas that require more work, if its a small area, do i just use the 1500 on that area, or do i have to use 1500 or so on the whole area?

Whatever works for you, keeping in mind that 1500 scratches need to be removed with 2000 scratches. Generally try the higher grit first, and if it's going too slow for you then drop down a bit, but make sure you spend the time at the end with the higher grit.
