System 51 buffing kit? 3m Perfect it? Noob here

So I painted the car last week, and have a lot of runs, and some dust.. I was going to sand out the runs and the dust, and then buff the car to blend in the sanded areas.

First off, what would that be called? Spot polishing? Can it be done? By that i mean, just sanding the problem areas?

Secondly, http://www.systemfiftyone.com/?cat=3 ? Has anyone used it? As a noob, would this be good for my needs? I'm happy with the amount of orange peel, but not the runs, obviously. :D I don't need a 'mirror' finish. I am happy with OEM style orange peel.. But I guess that can't remain if I have to remove dust and runs?

There is also http://www.ebay.com/itm/3M-Perfect-It-B ... ce&vxp=mtr ?

Not sure if that one is overkill for my needs? Obviously i trust the 3m 'name' more, but who knows if that's valid?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys!

I love how you're wanting me to say no.. :bighug:

But yes, I did.. I figure I'll have to polish no matter what I do, so, going to order something today. Just not sure if I need to go overboard with something like a massive 3M kit, or this System 1 will do the trick.. I'm skeptical on it because of the price, the 1 compound, and the fact it comes with tire dressing. So I'm wondering if it's more for cleaning and not buffing?

Why would you think I wanted you to say no? Doesn't make sense seeing I have been trying to help you out.
I thought you would post on the other thread how he told you to handle trying to save your paint job but you didn't so I asked.

I'm just joking around man. :D I talked to him that day, told me to just sand down with 320 with my fingers.. I'm just wondering if I personally am precise enough to take out runs with my fingers! Going to have to use my judgement if I should use a razor or sandpaper..

The idea is to sand just the run. If using your fingers helps you to keep on top of the run and not hit the surrounding clear that's fine. You may need to experiment a little with wood, plastic, hard rubber, etc. to find what gives you the best control. I have used a toothbrush handle before and just wrapped the sand paper around it. Personally I have found the razor blade method a little challenging and risky. One slip and . . .

I tried a few with a razor blade, and it seems to work for me (once I tape up the sides of the razor).. But I don't dare try to get it perfectly level.. that's when bad things will happen. :D I tried 320 with my fingers but I immediately started sanding beside the run.. Hope I didn't do too much damage!

The idea (with sandpaper, or a razor) is to get it perfectly flush I imagine? or just a thou above, then I can sand with 1500 or so?

Get the runs flush and then go about your regular cut and buff process.
