Did a search but is there a complete kit to do it all? Something with the sandpaper to the pads and polishes. I saw some polishing systems but I can't decide on that either! I saw 3M's Perfect-It system, but that uses just one polish. I thought the normal route was to go from a course grit to a finer grit.

I haven't seen such a thing myself...probably because there are just too many choices... :)

Thanks Chris. I'll just piece together the materials I'll need then. Do you have rough estimate on how many sheets of sandpaper I will need and what brand you prefer?

It's 69 Camaro, black bc/cc. I'm assuming I'll have a moderate amount of orange peel. Probably start out with 1000 and work my way up to 3000. It has to be perfect and flat as possible. I'm not too worried about the color sanding process as much as I am with the polishing. I have a Makita 9227C and I'm very concerned about slipping up. I read if I spend more time sanding with finer grits the less buffing I will have to do.

I also read that I'll probably have swirl mark issues after polishing. The Makita BO6040 has been recommended but dang they are expensive. Any other alternatives?

We are using Mirka 'gold' here...seems to work very well. I'd say you want to have at least five sheets of each grit on hand for a complete car.

69-er, what products and process did you end up settling on?

I started with 1000, then went to 2000, then 2500. Used a Makita 9227C with a wool pad and Wizard's Mystic Cut then switched to an orange pad and the Mystic Cut. I didn't have a Makita BO4060, which seems to be the ticket for swirl mark removal, so it was suggested to use the 9227C with Wizard's Mystic Polish and a black pad.

I now have a BO6040, so I need to figure out the next step; use the cutting compound or polish with the black pad. Maybe both? Is it possible to remove all the cutting compound from the black pad so it doesn't contaminate the polish?
