Would a regular da sander work with the trizact system or do you really need the 3M one ? I would not think it would matter but there may be something I have missed reading about it. Thanks for any suggestions you guys have about this. I will get another da if I really need it with this system but I don't want to spend money if I don't really have too. Thanks

As long as your sander has an orbital mode it will work.
Also, you should get a soft interface pad like this: http://www.autogeek.net/meguiars-6in-interface-pad.html 1968 Coronet R/T

Is that pad needed when sanding to bare metal? If so I need to get one, or is there a different one for going to bare metal? |
No, it is meant to help you not "catch an edge" or cause dishing when finish sanding.
For stripping I use a regular pad made to use with PSA discs. Similar to this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ATD-Tools-2078- ... 4897.l4275 1968 Coronet R/T
