I know Metallics are a no go but what about pearls? Also, if painting an engine bay with original paint in good shape, is it possible to clean and scuff and then paint or is primer a must? Thanks.

Pearls are the same as metallics. Can't be wet sanded since you'll expose the flakes.

If paint is in good condition then clean and scuff is sufficient preparation. I'd check first what kind of paint has been used, to ensure that what you're going to put over it is compatible. If not it may need sealing or priming.

Stay away from SS metallics and Pearls unless you are a spray master, even when sprayed well they tend to dull down over time and can't be buffed. Not worth the trouble
