I am gonna be painting a door soon, the paint is pretty good, just has 1 deep scratch and some kind of splatter on it ( some type of compound ).

Ok so here is what I'mn gonna do, sand the scratch down, sand the other missperfections out.

My question is should I sand down to the old primer ? Or just scuff up the surface ? Do I need to atleast sand away the clear coat ?

Heres some friendly advice, Depending on how nice of a job you want, Sand the imperfections out with a block, with 180 grit paper on it, and prime it and block the primer.

if you just sand the imperfections out, you'll get whats called a bullseye in your paint job,

Or, you can buy some 2 part putty, and fill the scratchs with putty, then scuff the door, and then seal/color/clear the door..
