This was the 1st time I cleaned under the bonnet as my car is second hand.
I have a faint hard grey-black build up, some areas are easy to wipe off others I could only get stains off by Metho on a rag & hard rubbing. A few times this seemed to take a bit of the paint off as the rag had some color on it. Still visually better than a grey-black tan on the paint.

I'm not sure what this stuff is (simply engine oil?), but is it usually hard to get off or does regular cleaning with a wet rag do it?
I read some say that Mentholated spirits won't harm car paint, but maybe if it's old & the film of grime & oil is really penetrate into the paint it will?

Do you think I should go over the under bonnet paint with polish & than a sealer coat now? Or would I have taken some of the clear coat off making it somewhat pointless?

I would try something along the lines of Simple Green or something that will degrease, something maybe from Gunk.

Simple green is good for light grime, anything thicker then would go with wax & grease remover, nothing stronger.
