800 to start cutting? Opinions..

Discuss anything after that final masking comes off.

Hi guys,

I started cutting with 1000 and it's really taking a lot of work to get things flattened out. I have a full three coats of clear on the whole car and was wondering if you think it would be okay to flatten things out with 800, then move on to 1000, 1500, 2000, etc..

Was thinking I'd be real careful and only use 800 until it's flat so I don't take too much off.. It took me over three hours with 1000 last night just to get one door flattened out and the OP on the door wasn't too severe..

Yes you can do that if you have enough clear on there and are careful.
You shouldn't have taken so long with 1000.
What paper are you using and are you doing it dry or wet?
The brand and type of paper makes a huge difference.

It's 3M automotive wetordry paper I got from my local jobber. Wet sanding. Only been about a week since I cleared it..

Also, if I go that route you think I can jump from the 800 to 1500 so I don't take much more off or will that not eliminate the 800 scratches?

Wow! Three hours to flatten the clear on a door using P1000 wet. :shocked:

That sounds more like a 3' swell than orange peel.

IMHO P800 is asking for trouble. Sooo easy to cut through.

Just an opinion.... but going from 800 to 1500 will almost certainly leave some micro scratching that will fight you as you go up in your process. I'm not saying you shouldn't drop down to 800 as I know how big those doors are and 3 hours is just too long on a single grit sand of that door.

What brand of clear is on there?
Sounds like one of those "rock hard" clears, like a Nasson I once used.
Some of those need to be sanded the next day, waiting a week
can be like sanding concrete.

I am using Nason clear. My bad, I forgot to mention I also had some major runs on that door that I needed to be real careful around as they were right in the middle of the door on the crease. No where else did I get much of a run except that door. I must have fallen asleep while shooting that door.??

I got the rest of the car flattened out with 1000 in a reasonable time. Did the driver's door with 1000, 1500, 2000, then 2500. I hit it with some Meguires M205 and WOW! I am going to be VERY pleased with this paint job. Got a mirror like finish and haven't even used the M105 on it yet.

I'll post some pics once I get her all polished up.
