How many of you guys use your 6in orbitals with a interface pad to dry sand your clears? Are Wet Orbitals the best to use? What grits are you using with your sander? thanks

GO dry, it is what i mostly hear of anyone doing now.. Use the backing pad and you can use the 3m hookit setup, it will cut the sanding time for clear in half... Make sure you use a seperate DA for that only... DO NOT USE your DA that you use on bodywork.... You will just be asking for trouble if a piece of something falls off that thing and you grind it in your fresh clear.

I used to do wet but as Matthew said a lot of guys are going dry now and most of the custom body shops around me are going dry. Having a dedicated "finish sanding" machine is definitely the way to go (the tighter the pattern the better). He's right, it's just too easy to get crap crunched in the coating adding a swirl pattern from hell that won't become apparent until later when compounding and polishing. I've used 1000 all the way out to 3000 grit for sanding in this manner.

I have noticed that when i dry sand clear coat with 1500 on my da, the paper tends to clog up quite quickly... is this normal?

How long are you waiting beofre sanding, and what type of paper are you using??

try using 1200. 1500 is too fine for cutting fresh clear

actually 1500 works great on new clear... however i tried sanding a bumper that has been dry for about a year and i used like 3 discs and didnt even get it half done... the paper kept cloging....
I am also going to be dry sanding some heavy oxidation off of a gel coated boat...what grit do you guys recommend? |
|
were you using 1500 on the bumper?
