Painting / taping door jams

Hello All, I'm getting ready to paint the base coat on my 86 Chevy truck. This is a color change for the truck so I'm painting all of the hood, door, and fender jams. I have a question about painting the door jams. Would you paint the jams and door interior and clear coat, then assemble and paint the whole vehicle? If so how do you go about taping the jam so you don't get over spray or a paint line? Or do you assemble the vehicle and paint it all at once? I fear that I wont be able to paint the hinge area very well if it is assembled. Thanks for your help.

If I'm changing color, I like to hang the doors in my shop by chains from the ceiling and
paint everything the same time, that's the best way, painting them off the car. That leaves the body jams fully exposed too. If you don't have room for that, paint the door jams and body jams (doors removed) then reassmeble and paint the rest of the car taping off the jams. I usually tape to the first step inside the door, the line hardly shows. then reassemble and......... that way everything matches. JC.

3M SOFT EDGE MASKING

I too need to do this and have the same questions.
So let's say I spray all the jambs on the car, and clear them. I can let this then cure fully, correct? I'm not on a time frame? Do I use the foam tape to protect the rest of the car? Then, can I reassemble the car, and just apply the 3m foam tape? Do I apply the foam right at the edge of the previous masking line? Or maybe an inch in so I have some overlap? And if this is the case, do I just scuff the previously cured clear that I used in the jambs? |

Thanks Guys,
This is my first attempt at painting, and I nervous about screwing it up. I'm out of excuses now time to paint. Wish me luck. |

In the picture, the paint went past the jams a little (1" or so). Do you have to sand or scuff it? Would it be good to tape off the body so only the jams are exposed? |
LOL, you'll do fine. With my first paint job I was nervous too, so I actually followed directions and tech sheets carefully and used epoxy primer, lots of blocking. It came out great! It was the later paint jobs and "quickies" that I started screwing up by taking shortcuts when I got cocky...That's why I can't quit my day job yet. |

I have it all painted and almost put back together now. It turned out pretty good, especially for my first time and painting it pearl black. I ended up taping the jambs back to the first seam. You can't tell unless you look close. I'll post some pics in the completed projects forum when I'm done. Thanks again to everybody.

I'll sand the primer on the body removing the color overspray.
then tape the inside jamb at the first bend. I'll scuff the exposed jamb ledge that has color on it and usually the clear will spray in enough to cover it. It really is easier to hang the doors and paint everything at the same time, I'm close on room, but for the next one, I'm going to try that. (I don't do overalls usually so I'm still experimenting with it) JC.
