Here is the project:
Repaint my wife's 2001 BMW 525 with peeling clear coat and a little body damage from my Duramax tires (don't ask, but it wasn't me)
1. Wash it really well.
2. sand the car down with 500 grit
3. W&G remover and alcohol
4. 2 coats base (silver metallic)
5. 3-4 coats of clear
Does this sound right for a repaint of a silver metallic?

I wish everyone would post some pic
like of the damage and the peeling clear it would make it a whole lot easier for people to tell you what to do in the immortal words of Frank Sinatra "That's Life"

That will need to be striped down to bare metal and primed first...........Sorry,but you cant just sand and paint over that.

I agree. Once the clear coat fails the base coat has been compromised and is deteriorating even if it appears alright. Strip it down and do it right or you'll be wasting a lot of time and energy. Also, silver metallic can be difficult for a beginner to spray without problems. It can be done but you need to have your gun set up right and I wouldn't try it with a cheapo spray gun. 1968 Coronet R/T

I you have never painted a car before,,,this is not one to start on. Its not that easy to make it look good.
You can strip it,,,but take it to a Pro to paint it. "The number of parasites in the USA has now eclipsed the number of productive members of society"

I have done a little painting, but always one stage urethanes. Never a bc/cc. I would love to try it, if you would give me some key pointers on what to look out for. So far, I gather I need to sand down the areas of peeling clear coat all the way down to bare metal. The other areas I can hit with 500 grit and repaint over it. Thanks again for the advice guys. I'll post pics as I go.
