I know about different size fluid tips for different viscosity paints, but I noticed my air cap is marked No. 3. Are there different numbers and why?
It is a DeVilbiss FinishLine.

I have a Finishline 4 that came with 4 tips,
they all use the same air cap.
I think all the Finishlines are that way.

I've seen Devillbiss guns with different air caps that change the transfer efficiency. I'm no expert on the matter. AFAIK no 3 cap is HVLP. If you notice the Tekna gun uses a different cap but has the same efficiency as HVLP.

So That makes me wonder if there is a down side to HVLP.

Everything has a downside.
I know painters that still to this day don't use one.

HVLP's use more air, that's one downside.

HVLP does not atomize as well as a compliant/conventional gun.Speed is another drawback ,not a big deal if your painting a bumper cover but a complete will slow you down.In the late 90's early 2000's most painters were using hvlp until the compliant guns/RP's came out, they made painting fun again and most guys stopped using hvlp. Most compliant guns still offer the same material savings as hvlp so I really don't see the point in using hvlp any longer.I have been using compliant guns for the last 10 years, sata RP/tekna.

Very tough gun, been using one everyday for over a year and a half for 4-5 jobs a day.I use one for sealer with a 1.5 and I found a chrome one for waterborne with a 1.4,also a great solvent basecoat gun too.It puts the plus to shame for overall durability and sprayability, try one if you can.

I have been spraying 2 3000RPs one regular and one digital for the last yr or two now. They are hosers compared to the plus. So it might be awhile before I have to try a teckna. Thanks for the feedback. Let me know when it retires to the toolbox I am curious as to how long it lasts compared to the same punishment you throw at the Satas. My old Jet90 1.4 serves as my sealer gun if need be.

I have had my original RP running on 11 years with one new nozzle set in that time, that would be a tough record to break. But so far the tekna is holding its own,it has survived being torn down after each use like a champ and still sprays the same.

JC, does your FinishLine 4 have No 4 on the air cap?
